Regenerative Medicine Patient Information
Important information about regenerative and orthobiologic treatment options, their regulatory status, and how candidacy is determined.
Certain products marketed as regenerative medicine, including some stem-cell, umbilical-cord, Wharton's Jelly, exosome, and related products, have not been FDA-approved to treat orthopedic conditions. Patients should discuss the specific product and its regulatory status with their medical provider before treatment.
What Regenerative Medicine Means Here
Regenerative medicine and orthobiologic procedures use biologic materials as part of an individualized treatment approach for certain musculoskeletal conditions. Houston Spine & Regenerative Medicine evaluates patients experiencing joint, tendon, soft-tissue, and spine-related conditions to determine which conservative, interventional, or regenerative treatment options may be clinically appropriate.
An Evolving Field
Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing field. The regulatory status, evidence, indications, risks, and potential benefits differ significantly among individual products and procedures. Information on this website is general and does not describe the specific product or procedure that may be recommended for you.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma uses a concentrated preparation derived from a patient's own blood. PRP may be considered by a medical provider as part of the treatment plan for certain musculoskeletal injuries or conditions. A consultation and examination are necessary to determine whether PRP may be appropriate for your condition.
Peptide-Related Medications
Peptides are naturally occurring chains of amino acids involved in numerous biological processes. Certain peptide-related medications may have specific FDA-approved uses, while other compounds promoted as "peptide therapy" may not be FDA-approved for the conditions for which they are sometimes marketed. Treatment recommendations are based on medical history, evaluation, clinical appropriateness, and applicable prescribing and regulatory requirements.
Candidacy and Outcomes
Treatment recommendations vary by diagnosis and patient. Not every patient is a candidate for regenerative or orthobiologic procedures, and outcomes vary. Availability of a particular medication or treatment does not mean that it is appropriate for every patient. No particular outcome is guaranteed.
Your Conversation With Your Provider
Your provider will discuss the specific treatment being considered, available alternatives, potential risks and benefits, and whether the treatment is appropriate for your condition. Please raise any questions about the product, its regulatory status, and expected recovery before proceeding.
