What Is a Labral Tear?

A labral tear can take place if there is damage to a ball-and-socket joint. For example, a labral tear can happen in the hip or shoulder. The ball of the femur (in the leg) and the humerus (in the arm) are connected to the ball and socket joint with a thin layer of connective tissue. In the case of the hip, this tissue connects the head of the femur to the acetabulum. The labrum is responsible for allowing the femoral head to move smoothly in the hip socket. If the labrum is torn, it can lead to significant mobility issues. This same injury can happen in the shoulder as well.

Causes and Symptoms

There are several possible reasons why you may suffer a torn labrum. They include:

  • Structural Issues: If you have a condition that causes an abnormal movement of the hip or shoulder, it can lead to a torn labrum. For example, in the hip, you may have a condition that causes the femoral head of the hip to not fit into the socket properly. This can lead to a significant amount of groin pain and limit your mobility. It can eventually lead to a torn labrum.
  • Traumatic Injury: You can also suffer a torn labrum through a traumatic injury. For example, if you play sports that lead to repetitive high-impact movements, such as soccer or football, you may be more likely to suffer a torn labrum.
  • Chronic Medical Conditions: If you have a chronic medical condition that leads to gradual degeneration of the cartilage between the joints, you may eventually suffer a torn labrum in the hip or shoulder.

There are numerous reasons why you may suffer a torn labrum. There are also several symptoms you may notice if you have torn your labrum and your hip or shoulder. They include:

  • Pain and Stiffness: You will probably experience significant pain and stiffness in your hip or shoulder, depending on where the labrum has been torn. You will have a significantly reduced range of motion in that joint.
  • Clicking and Locking: When you try to move the affected joint, you may feel some clicking or locking. You may feel like your hip or shoulder is turning like a gear, grinding against the rest of the joint as it moves.
  • Mobility Issues: In the case of a torn labrum in the hip, you may have some significant mobility issues. You might feel like you are having a difficult time balancing because of the damage to the labrum.
