Rotator Cuff Tear: What Is It?

The rotator cuff refers to a specific group of muscles that encapsulate the soldier. There are numerous muscles and tendons that are responsible for supporting the shoulder joint, keeping the upper arm connected to the socket of the shoulder. If one or more of these muscles tears, it leads to a rotator cuff tear. It is also possible for someone to tear multiple muscles of the rotator cuff at once.

Causes of Tear

There are several possible reasons why you may sustain a rotator cuff tear, but the common theme is repetitive overhand motions. The natural motion of the arm is an underhand motion. Even though an overhand motion might be necessary or more effective in certain situations, it can also cause wear and tear in the muscles of the rotator cuff. For example, people who need to lift heavy objects over their head, or those who engage in repetitive overhand activities, could eventually cause one or more of the rotator cuff muscles to tear. It is also possible for a traumatic injury, such as a fall or a motor vehicle accident, to lead to a tear of the rotator cuff.

There are several risk factors that can make it more likely for someone to suffer a rotator cuff tear. They include:

  • Age: Rotator cuff tears are more common in people who are older than in people who are younger. Individuals who are over the age of 60 are more likely to suffer a tear of the rotator cuff.
  • Occupations: There are some jobs that require people to engage in repetitive overhand motions. Examples include carpenters and painters.
  • Sports: Summit Sports are also more likely for someone to suffer a rotator cuff injury, such as competitive weightlifting, baseball, and Tennis.
  • Family History: People with a family history that is significant for rotator cuff tears are more likely to suffer one themselves.

People need to be aware of these risk factors so that they can be cognizant of the health of the shoulder joint

How Regenerative Medicine Helps in the Treatment of Rotator Cuff Tears

At Houston Spine & Regenerative Medicine, we offer stem cell treatment for rotator cuff tears as part of our treatment plans. By using stem cell therapy, we encourage the native tissue that makes up your rotator cuff to regenerate. We want to replace that damaged tissue with native tissue instead of scar tissue. That way, we can maximize your functionality while also reducing the chances of side effects. Stem cells have not yet differentiated into specific cells, so we can encourage them to become muscle cells, replacing the cells that you may have torn. Before you decide to go with surgery, talk to us about how we can use stem cell therapy to help you recover from a rotator cuff tear.
